The Spring issue of Penn’s Stewards News from the PA Parks and Forests Foundation highlights Pennsylvania’s trails movement, 2024 photo contest winners, skiing in state parks and forests, Friends Group projects and much more.
Trails Movement
Silas Chamberlin’s article on the Past and Future of Pennsylvania’s Trails Movement provides both a history lesson and gives readers a glimpse into the future and importance of trails.
The author of the book On the Trail: A History of American Hiking, Chamberlin notes important actions by Congress at the end of 2024 that allows economic development agencies to prioritize investments in outdoor recreation infrastructure as part of rural development strategies, including trails and parks.
He also underscores the critical importance of volunteers in hiking clubs and other groups that have been critical to the development of some of our best known trail resources today.
First Day Hikes
PPFF President Marci Mowery noted 2,488 intrepid hikers participated in one of the 74 First Day Hikes covering 6,487 miles in a single day.
