DEP Proposes To Delist Currie Landfill Site In Erie County From State Priority List Of Hazardous Sites, Comments Invited
|
The Department of Environmental Protection invites comments on the proposed delisting of the Currie Landfill Site in Millcreek Township, Erie County from the state Priority List Of Hazardous Sites. (PA Bulletin, page 2571) DEP has completed a remedial response at the Site and has determined that the actions taken are adequate to protect human health and the environment. The site is approximately 32.5 acres and was operated as an unpermitted municipal and industrial landfill from approximately 1947 to 1966. The selected response involved containment of the landfill in place with a two-foot soil cap by consolidation of waste material DEP said the response addressed threats to the environment, human food chain and nearby populations from direct contact to contaminants on Site and prevented surface water migration and air migration. An April 2, 2012 Consent Order and Agreement between DEP, Moxie Nein LLC, and Millcreek Township allow for ball fields and other recreational facilities to be built on top of the cap, ongoing operation and maintenance requirements, and Environmental Covenants for each parcel prohibiting the use of groundwater from the Site. On May 4, 2014, the Department’s contractor submitted the final report which completed the remedial response activities. Comments on the proposed delisting are due 30 days from the notice. Read the entire PA Bulletin notice for instructions on reviewing the file related to the site, submitting comments and more background.
