DEP to Hold Compliance Workshop for Scrap Metal, Automotive Recyclers

The Department of Environmental Protection will conduct a free environmental compliance workshop for scrap metal recycling businesses and automotive recyclers on May 20 in Philipsburg, Centre County.

The workshop will start at 7 p.m. at the DEP Moshannon District Mining Office, 186 Enterprise Drive, Philipsburg.

“We hope scrap metal and automotive recyclers will take advantage of this workshop to learn more about our solid waste regulations and understand their compliance obligations,” said DEP Northcentral Regional Director Robert Yowell. “This will help to protect the environment and avoid civil penalties for violations.”

The workshop will present information on DEP’s solid waste regulations related to waste tires, oil, batteries, antifreeze and other wastes, as well as the proper storage and disposal of such items.

In addition, the workshop will include information on the National Vehicle Mercury Switch Recovery Program, which provides $1 for every mercury switch recycled through the program.

Pre-registration is required for the workshop. Those planning to attend should call DEP Recycling Coordinator Michelle Ferguson at 570-321-6533 or send email to: miferguson@state.pa.us and provide their name, phone number, and the name of their business.
