* Vice Chair Of DEP Citizens Advisory Council Asks DEP To Report On University Of Pittsburgh Study That Found At Least 800,000 Tons Of Oil & Gas Production Waste Sent To Landfills Was Unaccounted For In One Year

On October 10, DEP Citizens Advisory Council Vice Chair Timothy Weston requested DEP to report back to the Council on a University of Pittsburgh study that found at least 800,000 tons of waste generated by conventional and unconventional oil and gas industry was unaccounted for in the amount of waste received by landfills in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York in 2019.

* DEP Reports Shale Gas Operations Sent Over 138,000 Cubic Feet Of Radioactive TENORM Waste To Low-Level Radioactive Waste Facilities For Disposal In 2022 - Over 911,000 Cubic Feet Since 2017

On September 29, DEP told the Low-Level Waste Advisory Committee shale gas operations in Pennsylvania sent 138,336 cubic feet of radioactive TENORM waste to the Waste Control Specialists low-level radioactive waste facility in Texas for disposal.

* Conventional Oil & Gas Industry Still Fighting To Make Road Dumping Its Wastewater Legal; DEP Introduces Concepts Of A ‘Life Insurance Policy’ For Plugging Wells; Certified 3rd Party Inspectors

On October 12, DCED’s PA Grade Crude Development Advisory Council, representing the conventional oil and gas industry, met on a wide range of issues, including promoting the idea of how to make road dumping its wastewater legal.

* The Derrick: Permanent Alternate Water Supply Being Considered For Village Of Reno, Venango County After Contamination By Conventional Oil Well Wastewater Spill

On October 13, The Derrick reported the Franklin General Authority is considering a request for a permanent water connection to the Village of Reno water supply system to provide 36,000 gallons of water a day to replace the water lost as a result of a conventional oil well wastewater spill.

From October 7 to 13 DEP’s Oil and Gas Compliance Database shows oil and gas inspectors filed 449 inspection entries.

* DEP Invites Comments At Nov. 14 Hearing On Air Quality Permit For Energy Transfer Natural Gas Liquids Marcus Hook Terminal In An EJ Area, Delaware County

The Department of Environmental Protection has scheduled a November 14 hearing on a proposed RACT III Air Quality Permit for the Energy Transfer Marcus Hook Terminal in Delaware County.

* Sierra Club's Delaware County Team Hosts Oct. 16 Webinar On Lawsuit Challenging Law Preventing DEP From Protecting Public Health, Environment From Abandoned Conventional Oil & Gas Wells

On August 24, PennFuture, the Sierra Club, Clean Air Council, Protect Penn-Trafford, and Earthworks announced they have filed a joint lawsuit in Commonwealth Court against the General Assembly and Gov. Shapiro, challenging the constitutionality of a law that prevents the Commonwealth from protecting communities, public health and the environment from the harm caused by abandoned conventional oil and gas wells.

* DOE Awards Natural Gas-Based Hydrogen Hub In Western PA, Renewable/Nuclear Power-Based Hydrogen Hub In Eastern PA; Reactions

On October 13, the US Department of Energy awarded two hydrogen hub projects that include Pennsylvania-- a natural gas-based Appalachian Hub in Western PA, West Virginia and Ohio and a Mid-Atlantic Hub in eastern PA, Delaware and New Jersey based on the use of renewable and nuclear energy to make the hydrogen.

* DEP Extends Public Comment Period On Interim Final Environmental Justice Permit Review Policy To Nov. 30; Will Schedule Additional Hearings

In a social media announcement on October 12, the Department of Environmental Protection said it is extending the public comment period on its Interim Final Environmental Justice Permit Review Polity to November 30 and will be scheduling additional public hearings.

* EPA Awards Penn State Hershey Medical Center $1.19 Million Community Pollution Prevention Grant To Advance Environmental Justice In PA, NY

On October 12, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced it selected Pennsylvania State University Hershey Medical Center to receive a $1,199,108 pollution prevention grant.

* Federal Office Of Surface Mining Awards $150,000 Grant For Cambria County Mine Reclamation Project To Western PA Coalition For Abandoned Mine Reclamation

On October 5, the federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement announced the award of $150,000 of a Watershed Cooperative Agreement Program grant to the Western Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation.

On October 13, the Department of Environmental Protection announced it has reached a Settlement Agreement with DC Ambler Properties, LLC., who owns the Ambler Asbestos Piles Superfund Site, to pay $500,000 in stipulated penalties to resolve its liability for outstanding violations of a 2014 Consent Order and Agreement (COA).
