Advanced Forestry Workshop Offered By Westmoreland District March 28
Photo

The Westmoreland Conservation District is offering a second-level course on the principles of good forest stewardship on March 28, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the District’s headquarters on the Donohoe Road in Greensburg.

About half of all the land in Westmoreland County is forest, and most of those forests are privately owned. How well private woodlot owners manage their forested resources is important to all of us because, among other things, forests are an important "filter" that helps improve the quality of our streams and rivers.

Participants will receive information on basic woodlot ecology, silviculture, measurement and timber-volume determination, stand development and forest history, forest succession, tolerance, crown position, relative stand density, and types of cutting.

Class members will have the opportunity to immediately apply their new knowledge by developing a stand prescription in nearby Ann Rudd Saxman Nature Park.

The District’s forester, Tony Quadro(photo), will lead the workshop, which the District is cosponsoring with the Westmoreland Woodlands Improvement Association.

The cost is $10, or the reduced rate of $5 for members of the Westmoreland Woodlands Improvement Association. Space is limited and registration by March 25 is required.

For more information or to register, visit the District's website or contact Christie at 724-837-5271, ext. 210 or send email to: christie@wcdpa.com.
