Wildlands Conservancy Hosts Native Plant Sale May 15 - 16
|
Wildlands Conservancy will host its annual Native Plant Sale on May 15 and 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Pool Wildlife Sanctuary, 3701 Orchid Place, Emmaus. Native wildflowers, grasses, trees, shrubs, and vines will be on sale.
The Native Plant Sale is sponsored by East Penn Bank.
Knowledgeable staff and volunteers will be on site to offer advice on plant purchases and to answer questions. The sale will also feature exhibits and demonstrations on bonsai trees from the Bonsai Society of the Lehigh Valley.
“Wildlands Conservancy hosts the Native Plant Sale each year to provide an opportunity for residents to purchase plants that are ecologically valuable to the region,” says Christopher M. Kocher, president, Wildlands Conservancy, “Pennsylvania’s native plants are meant to grow here. The plants flourish with less maintenance, reducing the need to water and fertilize them. They also attract wildlife and serve many ecological functions.”
Pennsylvania’s native plants are plant species that lived and thrived in this area before it was colonized by Europeans in the 1600s. Native plants are well adapted to the soil, moisture and weather conditions of the area making them more apt to survive the winter cold and summer heat. They are resistant to most pests and diseases and require no irrigation or fertilization once established.
Native plants are important for storm water management, erosion control, air and water quality, landscape aesthetics, recreational opportunities, food and habitat for wildlife.
