DCNR Receives Four PA Parks & Recreation Society Awards

The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources was the proud recipient of four separate awards from the PA Parks and Recreation Society at its annual meeting this spring.
DCNR Secretary John Quigley was presented with the 2010 Governmental Award for the leadership and dedication that he displayed over the past 12 months during exceptionally difficult times for DCNR.
His accomplishments include: managing gas leasing on state forest lands; dealing with significant budget shortfalls forcing tough personnel decisions; the completion of the Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan; efforts to optimize the use of resources on a regional basis through the Conservation Landscape Initiatives; and emphasizing green practices in the grants program and at state parks and forests.
The 2010 Distinguished Member award went to DCNR Division Chief Diane Kripas, who has dedicated 30 years to the field of recreation and parks beginning with her studies at Hood College. At DCNR’s Bureau of Recreation and Conservation, she has been instrumental in the inception and fostering of a multitude of new recreation and park departments in the state.
The 2010 Publication Award went to iConserve Pennsylvania for its multifaceted communications program to move key audiences to conservation awareness and action through its brand identity; website; printed and promotional materials; marketing strategies; and training programs.
A second 2010 Publication Award went to “PA Land Choices, an Educational Guide” and its author, Estelle Rupert. PA Land Choices is a comprehensive program about community character, civic responsibility and conservation of natural resources. This publication led the way for land use education and has been a model for other state and national education initiatives.
PRPS is the Commonwealth’s recognized professional organization promoting healthy, high quality recreation and park opportunities for all citizens of Pennsylvania through education, training, and technical assistance and to local, county, state and national recreation and park providers.
The society is a non-profit membership association with over 1,800 members statewide.
