Rep. Matzie Calls For Indexing Gas Leases By Property Address
|
Rep. Robert F. Matzie (D-Allegheny) has introduced House Bill 1726 to create a system for the indexing of natural gas leases by property address.
Rep. Matzie noted that, as the Marcellus Shale industry continues to grow and flourish across the state, many residents have found that they are experiencing the impact of natural gas drilling first hand.
"This legislation provides an important tool for residents to easily access information regarding the leasing of land for natural gas exploration that may be located within close proximity to their homes," Rep. Matzie said. "Pennsylvania residents have a right to know if their land, water or overall environment could be impacted by gas drilling."
Currently, lease information can be obtained through the County Recorder of Deeds Office by searching under the parcel identification number. Without the parcel identification number or some prior knowledge of the area, lease information may be hard to find.
"Adding the property address to the index of natural gas leases would simplify this process and make information on natural gas leases more readily available to the public," Rep. Matzie said.
Rep. Matzie said he became aware of the issue through an email he received from a concerned constituent.
