DEP Hearing On Jan. 22 About Proposed Clearfield County Landfill

The Department of Environmental Protection will host a public hearing on January 22, to receive comments about PA Waste LLC’s proposal to construct a new municipal waste landfill in Boggs Township, Clearfield County.

The 7 p.m. hearing, which the Clearfield County commissioners requested, will be at Lighthouse Evangelical Church at 7993 Drane Hwy. in the West Decatur section of Boggs Township, Clearfield County.

“We hope that the interested public will use this opportunity to provide comments about this proposal,” DEP Northcentral Regional Director Marcus Kohl said. “The department will carefully consider all relevant testimony before making a final decision on this permit application.”

The proposed site for the new Camp Hope Run landfill is on a 2,000-acre parcel about seven miles southeast of Clearfield. The 850-acre permitted area would provide municipal waste disposal capacity for 25 years at the acceptance rate of 5,000 tons per day.

PA Waste LLC submitted its application for the landfill construction in 2006. In 2008, DEP denied the permit based on deficiencies in its site suitability analysis. PA Waste appealed the agency’s decision to the state Environmental Hearing Board and in 2010, the board sustained the appeal and remanded the case back to DEP.

During the hearing, the public will have an opportunity to present up to five minutes of oral testimony about the application. Written testimony of any length will also be accepted. The testimony will be recorded by a court reporter and transcribed into a written document, and DEP will create a written response to all relevant testimony provided during the hearing.

Those who wish to present oral testimony may register that evening prior to the hearing.

For anyone unable to attend the public hearing, written comments should be submitted by the close of business on Jan. 22 to: DEP Waste Management Program Manager, 208 W. 3rd St., Suite 101, Williamsport, PA 17701.

The updated permit application is available for review at the DEP Northcentral Regional Office in Williamsport, Lycoming County; the Clearfield County Commissioners’ office in Clearfield; and the Boggs Township, Clearfield County, municipal building.
