Mark C. Pedersen, a manager with Republic Services, has been named president of the PA Waste Industries Association, which represents private-sector waste haulers, landfill operators, and recyclers and serves as the state chapter of the National Solid Wastes Management Association.

The president of PWIA chairs the organization’s Steering Committee, the policy-making body, and serves as its spokesperson. Pedersen succeeds Tim O’Donnell, who served as president from 2006 until last month.

As a post-collections general manager for Republic, the nation’s second-largest waste company, Pedersen is responsible for two landfills, four transfer stations, and a gas-to-energy plant in eastern and central Pennsylvania and the New York City area. He is based at Modern Landfill in York.

Pedersen previously served as an area environmental manager and senior environmental engineer for Republic, and as a senior project manager for Waste Management. Before that, he served as an officer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental engineering from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in environmental science and management from Duquesne University, plus numerous course completions from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the NATO Demolitions School, and the U.S. Army Command and Services Staff School.

Pedersen serves on the Department of Environmental Protection Solid Waste Advisory Committee, the Pennsylvania Recycling Fund Advisory Committee, and the Solid Waste Association of North America’s Keystone Chapter Board of Directors.
