Environment Erie, a non-profit environmental education group, has been recognized with the John C. Oliver Award from the Friends of Tom Ridge Environmental Center.

Linda Best, Director of Operations for the Friends, said Environment Erie's mission statement of commitment to the sustainability of the community's natural resources through watershed protection and restoration efforts and the promotion of environmental stewardship, especially among youth, fit the award criteria.

Environment Erie has several educational initiatives: Earth Action; a restoration program, Pennsylvania Lake Erie Watershed Association; and a revitalization program, Begin A Neighborhood Environment for Wildlife.

This is the first time the award was given to a group rather than an individual.

The Award was named for John C. Oliver, the first Secretary of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources created under Gov. Tom Ridge.
