In September, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation-PA begins its 27th year of the Susquehanna Watershed Environmental Education Program that teaches students in grades 6 to 12 about the importance of water quality in hands-on and on-the-water experiences. CBF-PA educators will work with 19 regional groups in 11 counties to get students out on the water. The Fall season of student programs begins September 11 and ends on November 29. The Fall program will involve 18 trips in Adams, Bedford, Cambria, Centre, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lycoming, Snyder, Union and York counties. SWEEP will guide students through a series of water quality programs designed to reinforce in-class lessons and to emphasize the importance of clean water. Students will enjoy the opportunity to paddle a canoe. They will also investigate the health of local waterways through a variety of hands-on activities like up-close studies of the bugs and other species living in the waterway; studying the physical characteristics of the waterway, the shoreline, and the adjoining lands; using water chemistry tests to determine quality; and by using maps to orient students with their specific watershed. The education program operates its own mobile/traveling canoe fleet for students, teachers, and guests, usually running about 50 trips for students in Pennsylvania every year. The Spring session of the program will involve additional students in the program. Media interested in covering any of the Fall trips should contact B.J.
