On November 26, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources announced it has approved the placement of the Big Sewickley Creek Watershed in Allegheny County on the Pennsylvania Rivers Conservation Registry. (formal notice) DCNR also accepted the submission of the Big Sewickley Creek Conservation and Stewardship Plan by Bell Acres Borough and the Allegheny Land Trust. The Plan places these following areas in the watershed on the Registry-- -- The Big Sewickley Creek watershed from the headwaters to its confluence with the Ohio River located in 12 municipalities and 3 separate counties—30 square miles. -- The North Fork watershed from the headwaters to its confluence with the Big Sewickley Creek. -- The Cooney Hollow watershed from the headwaters to its confluence with the Big Sewickley Creek. -- The East Branch watershed from the headwaters to its confluence with the Big Sewickley Creek. -- The Rippling Run watershed from the headwaters to its confluence with the Big Sewickley Creek. Projects submitted to the Bureau, which are identified as part of the Plan, become eligible for implementation, development or acquisition grant funding through the Program. Click Here for a copy of the Plan. A copy of the Plan is also available for review at Bell Acres Borough, 1153 Campmeeting Road, Sewickley, PA 15143, (412) 741-5448 and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Rachel Carson State Office Building, 400 Market Street, 5th Floor, Harrisburg, PA 17101, (717) 783-2712. Visit DCNR’s Pennsylvania Rivers Conservation Registry webpage for more information on this program. Questions should be directed to one of DCNR’s Regional Bureau of Recreation and Conservation Advisors. An agency or organization that wants to nominate a watershed to be included on the Registry must complete a River Conservation Plan and meet other requirements.
